French Quarter Beignets

Do you love beignets but can’t find them in any store or restaurant near you? You are not alone. Most of my recipes are born out of desperation. You know when you have a craving for something and you feel like you can’t go on with life until you have said thing? That was me. There used to be an authentic New Orleans restaurant near us that had the most amazing beignets so my mission was to recreate them.

This was my first go at beignets and at first the recipe looks overwhelming but they are actually really easy to make and really fun. I had never used yeast before because honestly I was intimidated by it but now I want to make homemade everything! This recipe will make you feel like a real baker. At the end you will have fluffy and warm beignets covered in powdered sugar. These will seriously impress all of your friends and family and they will be begging for the recipe. I made about 15 and they were all gone within a day. So, pretend you are celebrating Mardi Gras, grab your beads, and let’s go!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Flour
  • 1 package Dry Yeast
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • Oil for Frying
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl mix together the flour, salt and dry yeast.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk until it begins to steam but not boiling.
  3. Combine the butter, sugar and milk into a large mixing bowl and stir together until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.  Set to the side until the mixture cools down to room temperature. (if it’s too hot it will kill the yeast, so let it cool.)
